GENEROUSITY
PERFORMANCE

"I have had significant things happening. I can confidently say we all have had significant things happening to ourself, our lives. I have felt like I have had lack of time to process. This is due in part to literal time constraints and in part to my successful attempts at avoiding such processing. I want to give you the gift of time and material for processing. Air dry clay has significance to me. It’s a material that my parents bought for me in elementary school. I made a polar bear for my dad because it was his favorite animal he has kept it on his dresser to this day. It was just a week ago that one of the ears fell off, my dad was devastated. I believe art is a voice for the times we don’t know how to articulate well. That’s why I want to do art therapy. I visited a graduate school a year ago and some change. While I was there they had air dry clay for us to play with, I almost wept from the significance. So today I bring you some of this material, that holds weight in my heart and I present it to you with the spirit of my middle name, which is hope. I want to give you a couple minutes to sculpt a representation of the growth you have experienced in the past year or growth you hope to see in yourself in the next year. Give yourself grace, play with the clay, let your mind unwind and give you images that might not even make sense to you right away... sometimes the meaning emerges later."
This is what I had planned to say during my presentation. It came out a stunted version and I kicked over a coffee cup. I am learning that there are moments when your internal world makes it hard for you to perform your best. I was met with grace and encouragement, the whole day felt like a huge blessing to my tired heart.
I found the lack of speaking about what each person made to be disappointing but I supplemented the void of sharing by taking a picture. I wanted to pay witness to what was made. I was surprised and encouraged by how quickly everyone made something, in the short amount of time that we had, most everyone was able to complete some semblance of an object. I think we know ourselves more than we think about ourselves.
